p(x) = 5x³ - 8x² + 3x - 4

x - 1 = 0

x = 1

p(1) = 5(1)³ - 8(1)² +3(1) - 4

= 5 - 8 + 3 - 4 = -3 + -1 = -4

Therefore, r(x) = -4
