a + d = 9                            (eq 1)

a + 3d = 25                       (eq 2)

solve the equations 1 and 2

 a + 3d = 25

- a +  d  = 9

we get,

2d = 16

d = 8

from equation 1,

a + d = 9

a + 8 = 9

a= 9 - 8

a = 1

b = a + 2d

   = 1 + 2(8)

   = 1 + 16

   = 17

therefore, a = 1 , b = 17
