Given :

Five equal resistances of 100Ω are arranged as shown in the figure.

To Find :

Equivalent resistance between A and C.

Solution :

❖ In upper branch (ABC) two resistances are connected in series. Hence their equivalent resistance will be

➙ R₁ = R(AB) + R(BC)

➙ R₁ = 100 + 100

R₁ = 200Ω

❖ In lower branch (AEDC) three resistance are connected in series. Their equivalent resistance will be

➙ R₂ = R(AE) + R(ED) + R(DC)

➙ R₂ = 100 + 100 + 100

R₂ = 300Ω

Finally R₁ and R₂ come in parallel. Net equivalent resistance of the circuit will be

➠ 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂

➠ 1/R = 1/200 + 1/300

➠ 1/R = (3 + 2) / 600

➠ R = 600/5

R = 120Ω
