Step-by-step explanation:

 {x}^{2}  - 2x - 8 = 0

a = 1

b = -2

c = -8

x =   \frac{ - b +    \sqrt{ {b}^{2} - 4ac } }{2a}

 x =  \frac{2 +  \sqrt{ { - 2}^{ 2} - 4 \times 1 \times  - 8 } }{2 \times 1}

 x =  \frac{2 +  \sqrt{ {4 + 32}} }{2}

x =  \frac{2 +  \sqrt{36} }{2}

Taking (+) sign

x = \frac{2 + 6}{2}  =  \frac{8}{2}

x = 4

Taking (-) sign

x =  \frac{2 - 6}{2}  =   \frac{ - 4}{2}  =  - 2
