x^2-4x-8=0
x^2-4x=8
x^2-4x+(2)^2=8+(2)^2
(x-2)^2=12
(x-2)^2=(2root3)^2
(x-2)^2-(2root3)^2=0
(x-2-2root3)(x-2+2root3 )=0
hence
x=2+2root3, 2-2root3
