x +1 = 3x

1 = 3x-x

1 = 2x

1/2 = x

or if the question is this then...

x + (1/x) =3

(x^2+1) / x =3

x^2 + 1 = 3x

x^2-3x+1 = 0

x = [3 +- (root 9-4) ]/2

= [3+- root5] / 2
