\underline{\red{\rm Screening \ Effect \ :- }}

  • The inner shell electrons protect the nuclear charge to reach the outer shell electrons which is known as Sheilding Effect.
  • Order - s > p > d > f

\boxed{\sf Z_{eff}= Atomic\ Number - \sigma }

\bf Rules\ for \ \sigma :-

  • For ns and np , for last electron , σ = 0 .
  • For rest np and ns e , σ = 0.35 / electron.
  • For ( n-1) th shell , σ = 0.85 / electron .
  • For (n-2) shell onwards , σ = 1/electron.

\bf Hence \ for \ _{37} Rb :-

\to\sf Rb = 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 4s^2 3d^{10} 4p^6 5s^1

Hence ,

\sf\longrightarrow \sigma = 0 + 8(0.85) + (28)(1) \\\\\sf\longrightarrow \sigma = 34.8  \\\\\sf\longrightarrow Z_{eff}= 37 - 34.8  \\\\\sf\longrightarrow \underline{\boxed{\sf Z_{eff}= 2.2 }}
