Find the single discount equivalent to two successive discount of 50%, 12%.

Let the CP be x

Formula for successive discounts:-

SP=(1 -  \frac{d1}{100} )(1 -  \frac{d2}{100} ) \times CP

SP = (1 -  \frac{50}{100} )(1 -  \frac{12}{100} ) \times x

 =  \frac{50}{100}  \times  \frac{88}{100}  \times x

 =  \frac{1}{2}  \times  \frac{22}{25}  \times x

 =  \frac{11x}{25}

Hence,

Discount =CP-SP

 =  x -  \frac{11x}{25}

 =   \frac{(25x - 11x)}{25}

 =  \frac{14x}{25}

Since,

D= \frac{d}{cp}  \times 100

 =  \frac{14x}{25}  \div x \times 100

 =  \frac{14x}{25}  \times  \frac{1}{x}  \times 100

 =  \frac{14}{25}  \times 100

D=56%

Single successive discount for 50% and 12%=56%
