Answer:

Suppose the price of an item be 100,then after discount of first 15%, the market price will be 85. And after next 25%(i.e. of 17 ), price will be 68.

Therefore the single discount will be 32.25%.

Answer:

Given:

The discount series of 25%, 15% and 10%

Concept used:

If discount is a% for price P

So, discount = P × (100 – a)/100

Total discount = P - discount

Calculation:

Let price be 100

25% discount

⇒ 100 × [(100 – 25)/100]

⇒ 100 × (75/100)

⇒ 75

15% discount on 75

⇒ 75 × [(100 – 15)/100]

⇒ 75 × (85/100)

⇒ 63.75

10% discount of 63.75

⇒ 63.75 × [(100 – 10)/100]

⇒ 63.75 × (90/100)

⇒ 57.4

So, discount 100 – 57.4 = 42.6%

∴ Equivalent discount is 42.6.

Using this formula

Equivalent discount of a and b = a + b - (ab/100)

A= 25%, b = 15%

⇒ 25 + 15 – [(25 × 15)/100]

⇒ 40 – 3.75

⇒ 36.25%

Again a = 36.25, b = 10

⇒ 36.25 + 10 – [(36.25 × 10)/100]

⇒ 46.25 – 3.625

⇒ 42.6%

∴ Equivalent discount is 42.6.
