Answer:

I am assuming, here, that you want the SMALLEST number you could multiply this by to make a perfect square, otherwise the trivial answer would be 1536. But THAT wouldn’t be any fun, would it?

The trick will be to factor this out into smaller perfect squares. If we find any factors that aren’t perfect squares will need to be made perfect squares to get our answer.

So, let’s factor this out . . .

1536 = 16 x 96 = 16 x 16 * 6

The first 2 factors (both 16) are already perfect squares. That last factor is the key. We need to turn the 6 into a perfect square. The simplest way to do this is to just multiply it by itself (6).

So, we’d end up with 16 x 16 x 36 and the way we got there was to multiply by 6. This makes 6 the answer to your question. Notice that we got there without even needing to determine what the final squared number would be. All we had to do is factor our starting number into as many square factors as we could and convert any non-square factors into squares. I could have converted the 16’s each into two 4’s, but that would not have changed the result. It was easier to just let them be 16’s.
