Question:-

find the solution of the following pair of linear equations.x+y= 16,x-y=4

Answer:-

  • The required numbers are 10 and 6.

Solution:-

  • x + y = 16 .........(1)
  • x - y = 4 ............(2)

 \large{ :  \implies \: x + y = 16}

 \large{ :  \implies \: x = 16 - y}

Substitute value of x in eq 2.

 \large{ :  \implies \: (16 - y) - y = 4}

 \large{ :  \implies \: 16 - 2y = 4}

 \large{ :  \implies \:  - 2y = 4 - 16}

 \large{ :  \implies \:  - 2y =  - 12}

 \large{ :  \implies \: y = 6}

Put value of y as 6 in eq 1

 \large{ :  \implies \: x + 6 = 16}

 \large{ :  \implies \: x = 16 - 6}

 \large{ :  \implies \: x = 10}

The required numbers are 10 and 6.

Answer:

(x+y) (x-y)

= (+16) (+4)

= {(16)²+(+4)²}

= {256+16}

= 272
