Make a 2×2 grid of square and draw the diagonal of each subsquare. Write the digits of the number to be squared along the left vertical side and top horizontal side of the subsquares. As shown in the pic. Multiply each digits on the left of the square with each digits on top of the columns one by one. Write the ones digit of the product below the diagonal of the corresponding subsquares.

Starting below the lowest diagonal, add the digits along the diagonal. Write the ones digit of the sum and take the tens digit, if any, to the diagonal above. Obtain the square by writing digits from the left-most.

Thus, we have (53) ^2=2809.
