  • Think of the largest number whose square is equal to or less than the first period. Take the number as the divisor and also the quotient.

Step 3:

  • Subtract the square of the quotient from the first period and write down the remainder below. Bring down the next period beside the remainder. Now, this number becomes the dividend.

Step 4:

  • Now, the new divisor is equal to two times the quotient followed by a digit which is also taken as the next digit of the quotient, such that the product of the new divisor and the digit is equal to or less than the dividend.

Step 5:

  • Repeat all the steps mentioned above till all the periods are over.

The quotient obtained at the last will be the square root of the number.
