HERE IS YOUR ANSWER:

 \sqrt{ - 36}  =  \sqrt{ - 1 \times 36}   \\  =  6\sqrt{ - 1}  = 6i

Here i refers to iota which is an imaginary number . It is used with complex numbers such as square root of any negative number.

Value of iota = root -1
