To find out the square root of a non perfect square use the formula :

x = non perfect square

√x = (Square root of perfect square)  + (x - perfect square)/2 × (Square root of perfect no.)

In this case :

√5 = √4   +   (5 - √4) / 2 × √4

     = 2 + 3/4

     =  11/4

    = 2.75

But when you check in the calculator you get a no. which is close to 2.75.

Hope it helps you...
