To find : sum of given mixed fractions

Given : (-4 \frac{1}{2}) + (-7\frac{3}{4} )

Solution :

  • Firstly we convert given mixed fraction into improper fraction .
  • -4 \frac{1}{2} = \frac{-9}{2}  and  -7\frac{3}{4} = \frac{-31}{4}
  • Now , we find sum of \frac{-9}{2} and \frac{-31}{4}
  • To find the sum of given rational numbers we get need to equalize denominators of both the rational numbers. By taking LCM
  • Therefore, LCM = 4
  • Now, multiplying numerators of both rational numbers by same number as multiplied by denominators to make LCM.
  • (\frac{-9}{2}) + (\frac{-31}{4} )

       = \frac{-18-31}{4}  \\= \frac{-49}{4}

Hence , sum of (-4 \frac{1}{2}) and (-7\frac{3}{4} ) is \frac{-49}{4} .
