Answer:

tension in string 1 is 60N

tension in string 2 is 80N

Explanation:

Let, the tension in string 1 be T1 and that in string 2 be T2.

Since, the combination is in equilibrium, the net force on it will be zero.

[FBD in attachment ]

Two equations are obtained, one of horizontally acting forces and the other of vertically acting forces.

#1

  • the cos components of T1 and T2 are acting horizontally and in opposite directions so they tend to be equal

T1 cos 53 = T2 cos 37

T1 (3/ 5) = T2 (4/ 5)

  • 5 gets canceled

3T1 = 4T2

T1 = (4/ 3) T2..eqn. (¡)

#2

  • The sine components of T1 and T2 are acting in the same directions vertically while the weight of the 10kg block is balancing these components by acting in their opposite direction, downwards.

therefore,

T1 sin 53 + T2 sin 37 should be equal to (10 × 10)

[ weight of the object is 100N as 10kg gets multiplied by the value of acceleration due to gravity, that is 10 ]

T1 (4/ 5) + T2 (3/ 5) = 100

(4T1 + 3T2)/ 5 = 100

4T1 + 3T2 = 500

from eqn. (¡),

4 (4T2/ 3) + 3T2 = 500

16T2 + 9T2 = 1500

25 T2 = 1500

T2 = 60 N

placing this value in eqn. (¡)

3T1 = (4/ 3) × 60

T1 = 4 × 20

T1 = 80 N

Hence, the tension in string 1 is 80N and that in string 2 is 60N.

Trigonometric Values used :-

Cos 37 = 4/ 5

sine 37 = 3/ 5

cos 53 = 3/ 5

sine 53 = 4/ 5
