If the expenses of wheat, meat, and vegetables of a family are in the ratio 12 : 17 : 3. The prices of those articles are increased by 20%, 30%, 50% respectively. The total expenses of the family on these articles are increased by?

Let their respective expenses be 12x, 17x and 3x

Adding all three gives us 32x

Now 12x increases by 20%; so the new expense will be 14.4x
17x increases by 30%, so the new expense will be 22.1x
3x increases by 50%, so the new expense will be 4.5x

Adding these three gives us 41x as the total new expense.

Hence we can conclude that the total increase in expenses of the family on these three articles is = [(41 - 32)/32 ] x 100 = 28.125%
