Let their respective expenses be 12x, 17x and 3x
Adding all three gives us 32x
Now 12x increases by 20%; so the new expense will be 14.4x
17x increases by 30%, so the new expense will be 22.1x
3x increases by 50%, so the new expense will be 4.5x
Adding these three gives us 41x as the total new expense.
Hence we can conclude that the total increase in expenses of the family on these three articles is = [(41 - 32)/32 ] x 100 = 28.125%
