The Total Number Of Moles Of Nitrogen Is 6.95 Moles

GIVEN-

A Mixture containing -

  • 46 grams of NO
  • 63 grams of HNO₃
  • 184 grams of N₂O₄

TO FIND

Total Number of moles of Nitrogen in the mixture.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as under -

To find out the total number of moles of nitrogen in the mixture we need to calculate the number of moles of nitrogen in each compound.

THE NUMBER OF MOLES OF NITROGEN IN NO.

Given mass of NO = 46 grams

Molar mass of NO = 14+16 = 40 grams.

According to stoichiometry

1 mole of compound = moles of its constituent elements.

So,

40 grams of NO = 14 grams of Nitrogen

46 grams of NO =

 \frac{14}{40} \times 46 = 16.1 \: grams \: of \: nitrogen

Now,

14 grams of nitrogen = 1 mole

16.1 grams of nitrogen =

 \frac{1}{14} \times 16.1 = 1.15 \: moles \: of \: nitrogen

So, 46 grams of NO contains 1.15 moles of Nitrogen.

NUMBER OF MOLES OF NITROGEN IN 63 GRAMS OF HNO₃

Given mass of HNO₃ = 63 grams

Molar mass of HNO₃ = 1 + 14+3(16) = 63 grams

since the given mass is equal to molar mass, So the number of moles of HNO₃ will be 1.

1 mole of HNO3 has - 1 mole of nitrogen atoms

NUMBER OF MOLES OF NITROGEN IN 184 GRAMS OF N₂O₄

Given mass = 184 grams

Molar mass = 2(14)+4(16) = 76 grams

Number of moles =

 \frac{given \: mass \: }{molar \: mass} = \frac{184}{76} = 2.4moles

we know that,

1 mole of N₂O₄ contains 2 moles of nitrogen atom s

2.4 moles of N₂O₄ will contain - 2.4 × 2 =

= 4.8 moles of the nitrogen atom

So, the Total number of moles of the Nitrogen atom in the mixture = 1.15+ 1+ 4.8 = 6.95 moles

Hence, the Total number of moles of Nitrogen is 6.95 moles
