Step-by-step explanation:

let the numbers be x and y

x+y = 75. (EQ 1)

x-y=17. (EQ 2)

for EQ 2 we get x= 17 + y

put this in EQ 1

I. e. 17+y+y = 75

2y=75-17

2y= 58

y= 29

x= 17+29= 46.

let one number be X and another be y

in 1st case,

x + y = 75 -------------1

in 2nd case,

x - y = 17 ------------ 2

Now in equation 2nd

x - y = 17

x = 17 + y

now substituting value of X in equation 1

x + y = 75

17 + y + y = 75

2y = 75 - 17

y = 58/2

y = 29

as x-y = 17

x - 29 = 17

x = 17+29

x = 46

Hence X = 46 and y = 29
