For finding valency let's first write there electronic configuration
N = 2, 5
So valency = 8-5 = 3
Cl = 2, 8 , 7
So valency = 8-7 = 1
But as both will gain electrons in there outer most shell so
Valency of N = -3
Valency of Cl = -1

The valency is the combining capacity of an atom to complete its octet to attain a stable electronic configuration.

  • The valency of ¹⁷N₇ can be determined by electronic configuration.
  • The electronic configuration of ¹⁷N₇ is 2,5.
  • It needs 3 more electrons to complete its octet.
  • Since it will gain 3 electrons to attain a noble gas electronic configuration, so the charge will be -ve
  • The valency of ¹⁷N₇ will be -3.
  • Similarly, the electronic configuration of ³⁵Cl₁₇ is 2,8,7.
  • It requires 1 more electron to complete its octet.
  • It will gain an electron so the charge will be -ve.
  • The valency of ³⁵Cl₁₇ is -1.

Hence, the valency of ¹⁷N₇ and ³⁵Cl₁₇ is -3 and -1 respectively.
