It’s the same thing as the fraction with 9 in the numerator and 3(2 + 1) in the denominator. 9/9 = 1.

Some people will probably say that the answer is 9 because they aren’t following the order of operations which includes using the distributive property when there is a number outside of a parenthesis. They’ll say that 9/3 = 3 and 3X3 = 9, but regardless of whether the number is inside or outside or outside the parenthesis, it has to be distributed into the parenthesis first.

If the question were 9/3(a+b) and we knew that a = 2 and b = 1, we would end up with 9/3a + 3b, not 3a + 3b. Plugging in the values, we’d get 1.

This question or some version of it has been on the internet for a while and there are always people who get the correct answer by using the distributive property and people who get the wrong answer by doing the 9/3 before factoring it into the parenthesis.
