using remainder theorem
x = - 3
ax^3 + 9x^2 + 4x -8 = -20
a( - 3 )^3 + 9 ( - 3 )^2 + 4 ( - 3 ) - 8 = - 20
- 27a + 81 - 12 - 8 = - 20
- 27a = - 20 - 61
- 27 a = - 81
a = - 81/ -27
a = 3
so the value of a is 3
x = - 3
ax^3 + 9x^2 + 4x -8 = -20
a( - 3 )^3 + 9 ( - 3 )^2 + 4 ( - 3 ) - 8 = - 20
- 27a + 81 - 12 - 8 = - 20
- 27a = - 20 - 61
- 27 a = - 81
a = - 81/ -27
a = 3
so the value of a is 3
