Given:

P(a,2), Q(-5,4) and R(-1,0)

P is mid point of QR

a= [-5+(-1)] /2

[By mid point Formula x= (x1+x2)/2, y= (y1+y2)/2]

a= [-5-1]/2

a= -6/2
a= - 3

Hence, the value of a is -3.
