Find the value of 'a' for which the sum of squares of roots of equation x^2 - (a-2)x - a - 1=0 assume the least value

i have just used the formula of a plus b whole square at last I have just completed the square of a - 1 whole square as a square is always bigger than 0 it cant be negative so at 0 it will be least so a must be 1 to make the square 0 any other questions please feel free to ask
