x-1 = 0

=> x=1

p(x) = x^3 + 3x^2 + 4x +a

p(1) = (1)^3 + 3(1)^2 + 4(1) + a

= 1 + 3 + 4 + a

=> 8+a =0

=> a = -8

Hope it helps
