Question :

Find the value of k if x - 1 is a factor of 2 x³ 3 x²+ 5 x - 4 k

Solution :

By remainder theorem :

If x - a is a factor of a function say f ( x ) , then x = a is a solution .

Let the given function 2 x³ - 3 x² + 5 x - 4 k be f ( x )

Since x - 1 is a factor of f ( x ) we can say that :

x = 1 .

Put the value of x as 1 in the solution and we can then get a remainder of 0 .

2 x³ - 3 x² + 5 x - 4 k = 0

⇒ 2 ( 1 )³ - 3 ( 1 )² + 5 ( 1 ) - 4 k = 0

⇒ 2 - 3 + 5 - 4 k = 0

⇒ - 1 + 5 = 4 k

⇒ 4 k = 5 - 1

⇒ 4 k = 4

⇒ k = 4/4

⇒ k = 1

The value of k is 1 .
