$if \: (x - 1 )\: is \: a \: factor \: of \: p(x) \: then \: by \: factor \: theorem \: p(1) = 0$

$p(1) = 4( {1})^{3} + 3 ({1})^{2} - 4(1) + k = 0$

$4 + 3 - 4 + k = 0$

$k = - 3$
