it is a quadratic equation.. so SUM of the roots is equal to -(first degree term coefficient/coefficient of second degree term )..and PRODUCT is (constant value/second degree term)
let a and b be the two roots
a+b=8,,ab=k,,, given a2+b2=40
now a2+b2=(a+b)2-2ab
40 =8*8-2*k
2*k=64-40=24
k=12!!
