find the value of p and q:
x^2+px - 9 = (x - 1) (x +q)

x {}^{2}  + px - 9 = (x - 1)(x + q)

x {}^{2}  + px - 9 = x {}^{2}  + qx - x - q

Now comparing coefficient of both equations.

p = q - 1. eq1

q = -9

Now put value of q in eq1

p = -9 - 1

p = -10

Hence p = -10 and q = -9
