For no real roots the discriminate of quadratic equation is less than Zero.

D < 0 .... ( i )

D = b² - 4ac ... ( ii )

From ( i) and ( ii )

b² - 4ac < 0

( - 2p )² - 4 × 1 × 1 < 0

4p² - 4 < 0

4p² < 4

p² < 1

p < ±1

So the value of p is less than ±1
