Given :    sec X + tanx = 9

To find :  value of tan x

Solution:

Secx  + tanx  = 9

Let say tanx   =  y

then sec²x = Tan²x + 1  = y²  + 1

=> secx = √(y²  + 1)

√(y²  + 1) + y = 9

=> √(y²  + 1)  = 9 - y

Squaring both sides

=> y²  + 1 = 81  + y² - 18y

=> 18y  = 80

=> y = 80/18

=> tanx  =  40/9
