a ) : x - 5 = 7 - 2x

Removing x from both sides :

= > x - x - 5 = 7 - 2x - x

= > - 5 = 7 - 3x

Adding - 7 on both sides :

= > - 5 - 7 = 7 - 7 - 3x

= > - 12 = - 3x

Divide by - 3 on both sides :

= > - 12 / - 3 = - 3x / - 3

= > 4 = x

Then, verifying the value of x by putting it on both sides and then comparing :

Right Hand Side : 7 - 2x = 7 - 2( 4 ) = 7 - 8 = - 1

Left Hand Side : x - 5 = 4 - 5 = - 1

As RHS = LHS, the correct value of x is 4, which is verified.

b ) : 3( y - 5 ) = 6

= > 3y - 15 = 6

Adding 15 to both sides :

= > 3y - 15 + 15 = 6 + 15

= > 3y = 21

Divide by 3 on both sides :

= > 3y / 3 = 21 / 3

= > y = 7

Then, verifying the value of y by putting it on both sides and then comparing :

Left Hand Side : 3( y - 5 ) = 3( 7 - 5 ) = 3( 2 ) = 6

Right Hand Side : 6

As LHS = RHS, the correct value of y is 7.
