x = 140

∵ Δ ABC is an isosceles triangle with AB = AC

⇒ ∠B = ∠C

   y = ∠C

∴ In ΔABC,

∠A+∠B+∠C = 180 (angle sum property)

40 + y + y = 180

2y = 180 - 140

y = 140/2 = 70

OR

x = y + y (exterior angle property)

140 = 2y

140/2 = 70 = y

SO

x= 140° and y=70°
