From eqn 2

x = 12-y     ---- eqn 3

Substitute eqn 3 into eqn 1

5(12-y) - 3y = 8

60-5y-3y = 8

60 - 8y = 8

60 - 8 = 8y

52 = 8y

divide both sides by 8

y = 6(1/2)

put y into eqn 3

x = 12-y

x = 12 -6(1/2)

x = 12 - 13/2

x = (24-13)/2

x = 11/2

x = 5(1/2)

∴ x = 5(1/2) and y = 6(1/2)
