x+y=5...... eq.1

x-y=3.......eq.2

Adding eq.1 and 2

x. +. y. = 5

x. -. y. = 3

___________

2x= 8

x=4

Substitution of x=4 in eq.1

4+y=5

y=1

To find...x×y

4*1=4

→Question:

Find the value of x and y if x+y=5,x-y=3

Equations given to us are:

   x+y=5     -(i)

(+)x-y=3      -(ii)

    2x =8

      x=8÷2

      ∴ x=4

→Substitute in any equation:

  x-y=3

  4-y=3

   -y=3-4

   -y=-1       ( - , - cancel)

  ∴  y=1

∴The values of x and y are 4 and 1 respectively.

→Verify:

x+y=5

4+1=5

5=5

∴LHS=RHS
