Look in the right side of the equation, we've Al3+ which actually means that the original neutral atom in the left hand side has lost 3 electrons to form this 3+ cation.
Well, let's have a look at hydrogen.
Initially we had, hydrogen cations.
And, finally, we have 2H2 in the right hand side which means we had 4 hydrogen atoms in the right side.
Which also, means that we should have had four hydrogen atoms In the left hand side too !
That means, value of x will be a multiple of 4.
I'm telling this because of a clue in the reaction which says that no electrons are left free, by which I mean, the no.of electrons given by aluminum atoms will be completely given too hydrogen cations to form even number of hydrogen molecules.
From the equation I also, know that aluminum can give electrons only in the multiple of 3.
So,
in this case, let's find the LCM of 3 and 4 which is 12.
Which means, 12 electrons will be given by aluminum atoms .
And to give, 12 electrons we'll have to have 4 of these aluminum atoms.
And, so, y = 4
And, thus, because x = 12 because each hydrogen atom has to get the single electron to form 12 hydrogen molecules and finally give 6H2 molecules.
So,
Final complete reaction will be,
4Al + 12H+ -> 6H2 + 4Al3+
Further balancing,
2Al + 6H+ -> 3H2 + 2Al3+
So,
y = 2 & x = 6
And, now,
