a) Solution-

20x = 60^2 - 40^2

20x = 60×60 - 40×40

20x = 3600 - 1600

20x = 2000

x = 2000/2

x = 1000

Thus, the value of x is 1000.

b) Solution-

36x^2 = 120^2 - 48^2

36x^2 = 120×120 - 48×48

36x^2 = 14400 - 2304

36x^2 = 12096

x^2 = 12096/36

x^2 = 336

x =

$\sqrt{336}$

x =

$4 \sqrt{21}$
