Since,

(  {a + b})^{2} =  {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}  + 2ab

 ({a - b})^{2}  =  {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}  - 2ab

So,

  = {(x + y)}^{2}   +  {(x - y)}^{2} \\  =  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  + 2xy +  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  - 2xy \\  = 2 {x}^{2}  + 2 {y}^{2}  + 2xy - 2xy \\  = 2 {x}^{2}  + 2 {y}^{2}  = 2( {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2} )
