Step-by-step explanation:

(i)  x + 1/x = 3

    (squaring in both sides)

    (x + 1/x)²  = (3)²

    x² + (1/x)²  + 2(x)(1/x) = 9

    x² + 1/x² + 2 = 9

    x² + 1/x² = 9-2

    x²  + 1/x² = 7

(ii)  x + 1/x = 4

    (squaring in both sides)

    (x + 1/x)²  = (4)²

    x² + (1/x)²  + 2(x)(1/x) = 16

    x² + 1/x² + 2 = 16

    x² + 1/x² = 16-2

    x²  + 1/x² = 14

(iii)  x + 1/x = 5

    (squaring in both sides)

    (x + 1/x)²  = (5)²

    x² + (1/x)²  + 2(x)(1/x) = 25

    x² + 1/x² + 2 = 25

    x² + 1/x² = 25-2

    x²  + 1/x² = 23
