Given equations:

  • 2x - 3y = 8 ❲ eq (1)
  • x + y = 12 ❲ eq (2)

To find:

  • Value of x and y?

Solution:

Using Substitution method:

  • A strategy for solving systems of equations that include solving for one variable and using that solution to find the other variable.

From eq (2),

➯ x + y = 12

➯ x = 12 - y ❲ eq (3)

Now, Putting eq (3) in eq (1),

➯ 2(12 - y) - 3y = 8

➯ 24 - 2y - 3y = 8

➯ 24 - 5y = 8

➯ - 5y = 8 - 24

➯ - 5y = - 16

➯ y = -16/-5

➯ y = 16/5

Now, Putting value of y in eq (3),

➯ x = 12 - 16/5

➯ x = (60 - 16)/5

➯ x = 44/5

∴ Hence, Value of x and y is 44/5 and 16/5 respectively.

⚪x + y = 12

⚪x = 12 - y {Equation 3}

\large\purple{\texttt{Now putting eq 3 in eq 1}}

⚪2(12-y) - 3y = 8

⚪24 - 2y - 3y = 8

⚪24 - 5y = 8

⚪-5 = 8 - 24

⚪-5y = -16

⚪ y = -16/-5

⚪ y = 16/5

\large\purple{\texttt{Now putting value of y in eq 3}}

⚪x = 12 - 16/5

⚪x = ( 60-16 ) / 5

⚪x = 44/5

Hence, the value of y is 16/5 and the value of x is 44/5.
