now given the roots are real and distinct,

b²-4ac > 0    [ D > 0   AND D = b²-4ac ]

16- 4k > 0   [ substituing the values of a , b ,c ]

16 > 4k

4k < 16

k < 4

This means that all values of k below 4 will give you real and distinct roots
