we know that the opposite sides of a rectangle are equal

and hence :

1) p +3q = 13                 eq.1

2)3p + q = 7                  eq.2

multiplying eq.1 throughout by 3

3p + 9q = 39       eq.4

3p + q = 7            eq.5 ( kept as it is so it can be easily simplified by elimination method.)

subtract (4 - 5)

8q = 32

q = 4

putting this value in eq. 1

p + 3(4) = 13

p = 1

therefore the value of p = 1 and the value of q = 4
