Explanation:

it depends with what axis the velocity is making an angle... let's us here suppose the angle made between velocity and x-axis is theta...

so the component along x-axis is,

V(x)= V cos(theta)...

as cos(theta)= adjacent/hypotenuse

and component of velocity of y-axis is,

V(y)= V sin(theta)

sin(theta)= opposite/hypotenuse...
