we have to find the volume of chlorine gas at 23° C and 750mm Hg needed to react with 125g of sodium iodide.

solution : first we have to see the chemical reaction between sodium iodide and chlorine gas.

  it is .. 2NaI + Cl₂ ⇒ 2NaCl + I₂

here it is clearly shown that two moles of sodium iodide react with one mole of chlorine gas.

mass of sodium iodide = 125 g

molecular mass of sodium iodide = 150 g/mol

so the no of moles of sodium iodide = 125/150 = 5/6 = 0.833 mol

so the no of moles of chlorine gas needed = no of moles of sodium iodide/2 = 0.833/2 = 0.4165 mol

here, P = pressure = 750 mm Hg = 0.987 atm

T = temperature = 23° C = 300 K

n = no of moles = 0.4165 mol

using gas equation, PV = nRT

⇒ V = (0.4165 × 0.082 × 300)/(0.987) = 10.38 L

Therefore the volume of chlorine gas needed to react with 125g of sodium iodide is 10.38 L.
