We have to find the volume of CO₂ at STP formed by the combustion of 14g of ethene.
solution : mass of ethene = 14g
molar mass of ethene = 28g/mol
so no of moles of ethene = 14/28 = 0.5 mole
combustion of ethene is ..
C₂H₄ + 3O₂ ⇒2CO₂ + 2H₂O
you see, one mole of ethene burns and produces 2 moles of CO₂.
∴ 0.5 mol of ethene will produce 1 mole of CO₂.
at STP.
1 mole of am ideal gas = 22.4 L
so volume of 1 mole of CO₂ gas at STP is 22.4 L
