since oxygen gas has the chemical formula O2 then there are basically 2 moles of “O” in every mole of “O2”. every mole of SO2 requires 1 extra mole of O (or half a mole of O2) to produce SO3 and and since there are 4 moles of SO2 then you’ll need 4 moles of O (2 moles of O2) thus the answer should be 2 moles of oxygen are required.

you can think of it in terms of an equation

4SO2 + xO2 = 4SO3 since all the SO2 reacts to form SO3
