Find the volume of the wood used to make a closed rectangular box of outer dimensions 60cm X 45cm X 32cm, the thickness of wood being 2.5 all around. Also find the capacity of the box.

External volume of the box =  60 cm X 45 cm X 32 cm = 86, 400 cm³

Internal volume of the box ie., inside box dimensions:

     (60 - 2 * 2.5 cm)  X (45 - 2 * 2.5 cm) X (32 - 2 * 2.5 cm)

     = 55 cm X 40 cm X 27 cm

     = 59, 400 cm³

This is the capacity of the box.

Volume of the wood used to make the box

    = 86,400 - 59, 400 = 27, 000 cm³
