AOB will be a straight line, if two adjacent angles form a linear pair.

∴ ∠BOC + ∠AOC = 180o

⇒ (4x – 36)o + (3x + 20)o = 180o

⇒ 4x – 36 + 3x + 20 = 180

⇒ 7x – 16 = 180o

⇒ 7x = 180 + 16 = 196

⇒ x = \(\frac { 196 }{ 7 }  \) = 28

∴ The value of x = 28.
