a) p(x)=3x²+11x-4

  • 0=3x²+11x-4
  • 0=3x²+11x-40= 3x² +12x -x -4
  • 0=3x(x+4) -1(x+4)
  • 0= (3x-1)(x+4)

either

  • 3x-1=0
  • 3x=1
  • x=1/3

or

  • x+4=0
  • x=-4

hence the value of x is 1/3 and -4

c).p(x)=x² + 7x + 10

  • x² + 7x + 10
  • 0=x² + 7x + 10
  • 0=x² + 2x +5x + 10
  • 0= x(x+2) +5(x+2)
  • 0=(x+2)(x+5)

either

  • x+2=0
  • x=-2

or

  • x+5=0
  • x=-5

hence the value of x is -5 and -2.

b)x²-3

  • p(x)=x² -3
  • 0=x²-3
  • x=sqrt (-3)
